Dicaprylyl Ether (Dioctyl Ether, CAS 629-82-3) is a light, fast-spreading emollient widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations. Its dry, non-greasy skin feel makes it an ideal D4/D5 cyclomethicone alternative for silicone-free formulations. The ether bond provides excellent hydrolytic stability, making it suitable for extreme pH formulations such as antiperspirant/deodorant, depilatory, and hair color systems.
Key applications include skin care (creams, lotions, serums, facial oils, sun care), hair care, color cosmetics, and deodorant/antiperspirant systems. It is non-SVHC and compliant with EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Dicaprylyl Ether is built on a saturated ether backbone (C16H34O) rather than an ester or a siloxane. That one structural difference explains most of its practical advantages. The ether linkage is not susceptible to hydrolysis, so the molecule stays intact across a wide pH range and in the presence of water, acids or bases. Formulators reach for it precisely where esters would risk hydrolytic breakdown — antiperspirant and deodorant sticks, depilatory creams, and oxidative hair-colour systems.
At around 0.81 g/cm3 it is lighter than most vegetable oils and spreads quickly, leaving a dry, powdery skin feel with very little residue or tack. It is a good carrier for lipophilic actives, fragrance oils and pigments, and it stays clear at low temperatures. Typical loading is 2–10 % in emulsions and serums, rising to 20 % or more in anhydrous formats such as facial oils, cleansing oils and body butters.
In creams, lotions and serums Dicaprylyl Ether improves spreadability and softens the drag that high-viscosity emollients leave behind. In sun care it helps distribute organic UV filters evenly across the skin, which supports a more uniform SPF film and reduces whitening; it is equally at home in mineral sunscreens where it aids pigment dispersion.
In foundations, BB creams and lip products it acts as a volatile-feel carrier that keeps pigments suspended and improves glide during application. In hair care it appears in leave-in serums and pre-shampoo oils, where it adds slip and shine without the build-up associated with silicone oils.
Because there is no Si–O bond to worry about, Dicaprylyl Ether is the workhorse replacement for D4/D5 cyclomethicones in silicone-free and clean-beauty concepts. Its pH tolerance also makes it one of the few light emollients that can be used at the low pH of antiperspirants and depilatories without degrading the formula.
Dicaprylyl Ether ships in 200 L zinc-plated iron drums with a net weight of 160 kg, or in 1000 L IBCs for larger volumes; laboratory quantities from 1 to 25 L are available so formulators can screen the ingredient without committing to a drum.
Store in tightly closed containers below 30 °C, away from direct sunlight and ignition sources. For long-term storage a nitrogen blanket is recommended. Under these conditions the product has a shelf life of approximately six months; it is not classified as dangerous goods for transport, which keeps freight simple and inexpensive.
