1,2-Pentanediol (CAS 5343-92-0) is a short-chain multifunctional glycol that combines three actions in one molecule: humectant, solvent and antimicrobial booster. Fully miscible with water, alcohols and most polar solvents, it fits easily into serums, moisturizers, cleansers, sun care and baby-care formulations.
In preservation systems it works synergistically with phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin and caprylyl glycol, allowing formulators to reduce traditional preservative levels — including paraben-free and preservative-light concepts. Typical use level is 0.5–5%. It also improves skin feel and helps dissolve fragrance oils and other fat-soluble actives.
1,2-Pentanediol (INCI: Pentylene Glycol, C5H12O2) is the shorter-chain member of the 1,2-alkanediol family. Its lower molecular weight and balanced polarity make it fully miscible with water and most polar solvents while retaining enough lipophilic character to act as a mild preservative booster and solubiliser. It is a clear, colourless liquid with very low odour and a light, non-greasy skin feel.
In formulation it behaves as a humectant that also improves the skin-feel of the water phase, adds a subtle slip to serums and gels, and helps dissolve fragrance oils and other fat-soluble actives. Typical use level is 0.5–5 %. It is supplied at ≥ 99.5 % (GC) purity and is classified as a Category 2 eye irritant (H319) under GHS, so normal laboratory handling with eye protection is recommended.
1,2-Pentanediol is widely used alongside phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin and caprylyl glycol as a multifunctional preservative booster. It allows formulators to reduce the level of traditional preservatives — an approach that fits paraben-free, preservative-reduced and mildly preserved concepts, and is particularly common in products aimed at sensitive-skin consumers.
Because it hydrates without occluding and helps keep the microbial load in check with a mild raw-material profile, 1,2-Pentanediol is a frequent choice in baby care, intimate care and barrier-repair products. It also contributes a pleasant, light texture in rinse-off cleansers and micellar waters.
It improves the solubility of fragrance and other lipophilic actives in aqueous bases, which makes it useful in clear gels, toners and essences. It mixes directly into the water phase, is stable through standard emulsion processing, and needs no special equipment or sequence changes.
1,2-Pentanediol is supplied in 25 kg net HDPE drums or 200 kg net iron drums, with bulk IBCs available on request. As a low-vapour-pressure liquid glycol it stores and ships without refrigeration.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly closed containers, protected from direct sunlight, heat and strong oxidisers. Under normal conditions the material is stable and is not classified as dangerous goods for transport. The GHS eye-irritation classification (H319) applies to handling of the neat material, so eye protection is recommended when dispensing.
1,2-Pentanediol is manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 and released against a full specification with a ≥ 99.5 % (GC) assay. Each lot ships with a COA; a TDS and a GHS-compliant English SDS (including the H319 eye-irritation classification) are available on request.
