What dicaprylyl ether actually is

Dicaprylyl Ether is a saturated dialkyl ether built from two C8 (caprylyl) chains joined through an ether bond. Because it carries no ester linkage, no unsaturation and no branching in the main chain, it behaves quite differently from the triglyceride and ester emollients it is often used alongside.

You will see the same molecule traded under several names. Dioctyl Ether and Caprylyl Ether are the most common synonyms, along with the systematic name 1,1'-oxybisoctane and the older trade designation n-octyl ether. Brand names add a further layer: BASF sells it as Cetiol® OE, Sasol as COSMACOL® OE, and other producers use the plain INCI name.

In Europe the ingredient is normally specified by its INCI name. What your formulator needs is material that meets the INCI definition — not material that arrives under a particular brand. That distinction is what makes a second source technically feasible in the first place, provided the physical and chemical parameters line up.

  1. What is the production address, and can you provide a batch traceability sample from it?
  2. Can you share the quality system certificate and confirm its scope covers this specific product?
  3. Who performed the last assay on this batch, and can I see the raw analytical report rather than a summary sheet?

The compliance documents that carry real weight

Ask for a GHS/CLP-format SDS compliant with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. An SDS written to US OSHA or to an older national format is a warning sign about how carefully the supplier maintains its documentation. Dicaprylyl Ether is not classified as dangerous for transport (non-hazardous, NONH), but a current SDS is still required for handling, storage and downstream customer obligations.

REACH status — the part that is most often misrepresented

Under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the registration obligation sits with the EU legal entity that places the substance on the EU market. If your company imports the material into the EU, the obligation is yours, and it is triggered once your annual import volume reaches 1 tonne per year for that substance.

A non-EU supplier cannot discharge that obligation on your behalf unless it has formally appointed an Only Representative (OR) under Article 8 of the regulation. This is precisely why the question “Are you REACH registered?” produces so many misleading answers: it invites a yes from suppliers who cannot point to any registrant.

The useful question is not whether the supplier is registered, but: have you appointed an Only Representative, and if so, who is it? A supplier that can name its OR and provide the registration number is in a different category from one that simply says “REACH compliant”. Be cautious with any blanket registration claim that cannot be traced to a named legal entity.
